As a senior in college, attending a virtual career fair on Handshake can be a great opportunity to connect with employers, learn about job openings, and make a lasting impression before graduation. To maximize your experience, follow these steps to ensure you’re fully prepared.
- Research Employers & Register for Sessions
Handshake’s career fair page allows you to see which employers are attending and schedule one-on-one or group sessions.
- Browse through the list of employers and prioritize those that align with your interests.
- Sign up early for 1:1 sessions to ensure you secure a slot with recruiters.
- Research each company by visiting their website, reviewing job postings, and understanding their values.
- Prepare specific questions to ask recruiters to show your genuine interest. - Polish Your Resume & Elevator Pitch
Your resume is a key tool in making a strong impression. Does your resume need to be updated or reviewed? We have four resources available to you:
- Email your documents to: careercorps@skidmore.edu for an email review.
- Drop-In for a Resume Reviews at one of the times and locations below:

- Attend the Senior Resume Workshop - March 4th at 5 pm in Ladd 206.
- Schedule an appointment to meet with a career advisor through your Handshake account.
Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch that introduces who you are, your major, your experiences, and what you’re looking for.
Example:
"Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a senior majoring in [Your Major] at [Your College]. I have experience in [Internship or Relevant Experience] and am particularly interested in [Industry or Role]. I’m excited to learn more about opportunities at [Company Name] and how I can contribute." - Prepare Questions for Employers
Engage with employers by asking thoughtful questions, such as:
- What entry-level positions are you hiring for?
- What skills do you value most in candidates?
- What does career growth look like in your company?
- Can you share insights about company culture?

A virtual fair means video calls, so be prepared:
- Test your Wi-Fi, camera, and microphone beforehand.
- Find a quiet, well-lit place with a neutral background.
- Dress professionally—at least from the waist up! - Follow Up with Recruiters
After the fair, send a thank-you message via Handshake or LinkedIn. Mention something specific from your conversation and express interest in future opportunities.
Example:
"Hi [Recruiter’s Name], I enjoyed speaking with you during the Handshake Virtual Career Fair. I’m very interested in [Company Name] and would love to stay in touch regarding opportunities. Thanks again for your time!"
